The Results Of Our Whipple Procedures

** Doç.Dr., SSK Ankara Eğitim Hastanesi 3. Genel Cerrahi Kliniği, Şefi, ANKARA Introduction: Today pancreaticoduodenectomy has been performed for both benign and malignant diseases of the periampullary region like chronic pancreatitis and cancer of pancreas and periampullary region.
Purpose: To evaluate the results of 60 patients to whom Whipple operation was performed for different periampullary lesions.
Material and Method: Sixty Whipple operations which are performed at Ankara Social Security and Education Hospital 3rd Surgical Clinic between January 88-January 99 were investigated. 44 of patients were male, 16 patients were female and mean age was 55.6. Reasons for operations were periampullary, pancreas and duodenum cancer, chronic pancreatitis and the ratios were 50%, 36.6%, 8.3% and 5% respectively.
Results: The operative mortality was 5%; 2 patients had pulmonary emboli, 1 patient had anastomotic leakage and except these cases 1 patient had cardiac insufficiency. The operative morbidty was 15%; 2 patients had pancreatic fistula, 2 patients had pulmonary infection, 1 patient had intraabdominal abscess, 1 patient had intraabdominal bleeding and 1 patient had gastric atony. The mean hospitalization period was 11 days. 5 year survival for pancreatic cancer was 13.6% and 32.4% for duodenal and periampullary region cancers.
Conclusion: The Whipple operation is an acceptable method with low mortality rates for periampullary and pancreatic malign diseases, when performed in experienced centers.Keywords: Pancreas, Neoplasms, PancreaticoduodenectomyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:99-103
