Corticosteroids And Their Use In Clinical Practice

Corticosteroids and biologically active synthetic analogs are discussed with respect to their relative glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid activities. These agents are employed both for replacement therapy and for the treatment of diverse nonendocrine disease. Corticosteroids exert profound effects on almost every organ system and, because of these diverse actions, are among the most widely used classes of drugs. As a consequence of their pleiotropic effects, the clinical use of and withdrawal from corticosteroids are complicated by a number of serious side effects, some of which are life threatening. Therefore, the decision to institute therapy with corticosteroids always requires a careful consideration if the relative risks and benefits in each patient.Keywords: Adrenal Cortex Hormones, Self Efficacy, adverse effectsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:131-140
