As deaths from this mechanism is rare, exitus because of bleeding with high dose verapamil was searched and literature was examined.
Materials and Methods: The case, which committed a suicide with high dose calcium channel blocker; verapamil, was examined by clinical observation and forensic autopsy in Cumhuriyet University Hospital.
Results: In the clinical observations of the case having taken high dose verapamil, there was decrease of thrombocyte number and elevation of prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times. There was no pathological findings that could explain cause of death except, excessive clotted blood intraabdominaly in the forensic autopsy.
Conclusion: As there was no additional supporter disease which could cause bleeding, verapamil's antiplatelet effects were thought as the cause of the bleeding. It was concluded that, while using these drugs, the antiplatelet effects of them must be remembered. Keywords: Calcium Calcium Channel Blockers, Platelet function, Verapamil, Platelet Aggregation, Forensic medicineTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:121-123
