Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem disorder of unknown cause characterized by fibrosis of the skin, blood vessels and visceral organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, heart and kidneys. The anaesthetic risk to patients with scleroderma may be increased because of involvement of various organ systems. The anaesthetist must be aware of the patient's general state of health and must search for evidence of pulmonary, cardiac or haematological abnormalities.
