*Yrd.Doç.Dr., Kırıkkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları AD, KIRIKKALE Purpose: The aim of this study is to search the prevelance of eye diseases in childhood at the primary schools in Kırıkkale city center and, in a way, to perform protective medicine for future aspects.
Institution: Kırıkkale University, Faculty of Medicine, Dept. of Ophthalmology.
Materials and Methods: This study covers the first classes of 22 primary schools, having children from various socioeconomical and cultural parts of the city, between the dates February 99 - June 99. Following a routine eye examination those who were below the 10/10 visual acuity as diagnosed with Snellen acuity chart and found to have a refraction error with autorefractometer had been examined with a cycloplegic.
Results: The number of students that had been involved in the screening was a total of 2386, out of which 1106 were girls and 1280 were boys. In 515 of them (21.6%), who were 222 girls and 293 boys, some type of ocular pathology had been determined. Those who had only refractive error rated 17.47% among the overall students screened. Of 417 students having only refractive errors 19 (4.55%), 68 (16.30%) and 330 (79%) were myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatisma respectively. In the other 98 (4%) students some different types of ocular pathologies along with refraction errors in some of them had been determined. And the strabismus was another pathology frequent among the refraction errors found in the students as 58 in number (2.43%) either solely or together with other pathologies. Nevus, another frequent one, was identified in 28 students (1.2%) again either solely or together with some other pathologies. The rate of amblyopia was found as 1.2%.
Conclusion: The reasons of preventable blindness are the main diseases causing poor vision in children. We, keeping this in mind, can reach the standards of developed countries in handling the health problems of our children by conducting succesful screening activities in our country with respect to the sensitivity to be displayed by the families, teachers, practioners, pediatricians and ophthalmologists. Keywords: Vision screening, Refractive errors, Childhood,
