Fetal Surgery And Anesthesia
İdil TEKİN*
*Yrd.Doç.Dr., Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anesteziyoloji ve Reanimasyon AD, MANİSA Fetal surgery is performed in a limited number of clinics. Advances in antenatal diagnostic technology have resulted in the early recognation and treatment of fetal disorders. Fetal surgery has some advantages like rapid wound healing, meeting of nutritional and respiratory needs by umbilical circulation, fascilitation of certain invasive procedures by the poorly developed immune surveillance system. Physiological changes in pregnancy, preterm labor, toxolytic agents, maternal and fetal anesthesia, and postoperative analgesia are the main topics of the fetal surgery. Fundamental considerations for the anesthesia are maternal cardiovascular stability, optimal uteroplacental perfusion, total uterine relaxation, adequate fetal anesthesia and immobility, minimal fetal myocardial depression, and blockade of the fetal stress response. Fetal surgery techniques must be developed before routine practice. Besides maternal and fetal risks must be reduced.
Currently fetal surgery is new and in experimental phase. Further controlled studies are required to determine benefits and safety of fetal surgery and anesthesia. Keywords: Fetal surgeryTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:210-215
