The clinical utility of new biochemical markers of bone metabolism has recently been investigated in various bone diseases. This study evaluated the role of skeletal alkaline phosphatase that is one of the bone metabolism markers in comparison with bone scan in the diagnosis of bone metastases in cancer patients.
Material-Methods: Forty patients with newly diagnosed cancer were included in the study. Bone scanning and serum value of total alkaline phosphatase and skeletal alkaline phosphatase were obtained in all patients.
Results: In all patients who had bone metastases proven by scintigraphy had also significantly elevated total alkaline phosphatase and bone alkaline phosphatase values. We showed that skeletal alkaline phosphatase could become a useful marker in the evaluation of patients with newly diagnosed cancers as it seems to provide additional information about the skeletal status of these patients.
Conclusion: We thought that, when skeletal metastases are of concern in cancer patients, both bone scintigraphy and measurement of bone alkaline phosphatase seems to be advantagous for recognizing metastatic bone disease earlier. But, according to our findings, we believe that serum levels of the investigated markers cannot replace bone scintigraphy
in cancer patients for the early detection of bone metastases. Keywords: Skeletal alkaline phosphatase, Bone scintigraphy,
