** Prof.Dr. Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anesteziyoloji AD, SİVAS Postoperative pain is a significant problem that continues to be undertreated in the pediatric population. Preemptive analgesia is based on administration of an analgesic before a painful stimulus generates, so as to prevent the subsequent rebound mechanism. Preemptive administration of analgesics has recently emerged as a method to enhance pain management associated with surgery. Postoperative analgesia proves not only patient comfort but also better improvement and reduces complications.
Preemptive analgesia modalities including medications administered orally, parentrally, epidurally, and also local anesthetic infiltration and multimodal analgesia techniques can be used. In this article preemptive analgesia in pediatric patients is reviewed. Keywords: Pediatric preemptive analgesiaTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:319-323
