The Frequency Of Impaired Fasting Glucose, Impaired Glucose Tolerance, Diabetes Mellitus And Hypertension In Obese Female Patients

İç Hastalıkları Kliniği, İZMİR Obesity is a major public health problem and is commonly associated with chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The goal of this prospective study was to investigate: 1) The frequency of impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HT) in obese patients 2) Distribution of IFG, IGT, DM and HT according to body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio (WHR). Fifty-eight consecutive obese outpatients were included in this study. Their average age was 37.49±11.51 years (range 18-63 year), BMI was 38.57±6.30 kg/m2 and WHR was 0.83±0.31 cm. None of them had endocrine disorder and previous history of diabetes. Serum fasting glucose was measured and 75 g oral glucose tolerance test was performed. The frequency of IFG, IGT and DM were 20.7% (n=12), 12.1% (n=7) and 5.2% (n=3) respectively. The frequency of previously and newly diagnosed HT was 37.9% (n=22). The frequency of IFG, IGT, DM and HT rises with increasing waist-hip ratio and severity of obesity.
In conclusion this study is confirming that obesity is a significant cause of impaired glucose status, diabetes and HT. Therefore obese patients must be evaluated for impaired glucose status, DM and HT, because obesity is also the most important modifiable factor for these diseases.Keywords: Obesity, Impaired fasting glucose,
