**** Uz.Dr., Siyami Ersek Göğüs Kalp Damar Cerrahisi Merkezi, İSTANBUL Purpose: In this study, we retrospectively examined 147 cases who had hospitalized with thoracic injuries caused by high velocity gunshots during military conflicts in South-East Anatolia region between 1996-1999.
Cases and Method: All of the cases were male and their average age was 23±2. Tube thoracostomy on 58 percent, emergency thoracotomy on 21 percent, late thoracotomy on 30 percent, conservative treatment on 11 percent of the cases were performed.
Results: The cases consist of injuries resulted from high velocity gunshots causing excessive tissue traumas. Five cases (3.4%) were low-distance gunshot and 142 cases (96.5%) were distant gunshot injury. Average hospitalization duration was 11 days. Four (3%) of the all cases resulted in exitus. On the other hand, complication was found out at the rate of 17%.
Conclusion: Our aproach and treatment results in such traumas, because they have high mortality and morbidity rate which result from their burst effect in tissue and multiorgan traumas, have been in accordance with the literature. Keywords: Thoracic trauma, High velocity gunshotTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:249-252
