*** Prof.Dr., Selçuk Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anesteziyoloji ve Reanimasyon AD, KONYA Perioperative mortality rate is very low. The definition of the perioperative period is controversial. Ranges between 24 hour and seven days postoperatively have been considered to evaluate mortality rates. Mortality rates also differ in different studies. Studies have been conducted to assess the role of anesthesia and surgery in mortalities. It is generally accepted that ASA physical status correlates with the perioperative mortality rate. When errors of management leading to anesthetic deaths are categorised, the three most common errors are inadequate preparation for anesthesia, wrong choice of agent or technique and inadequate crisis management. Studies on this subject in Turkey are scarce. We advocate that mortalities should be documented and reasons investigated. Keywords: Anesthesia, Surgery, Perioperative mortalityTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:311-318
