** Prof.Dr., GATA Biyokimya ve Klinik Biyokimya AD, ANKARA Bone tissue is such a dynamic and complex tissue that formation and resorption events are cycling consecutively each other where numerous elements and factors are involved. To monitor this active turnover of bone tissue effectively, measurements of some protein products and enzymes formed and released during this turnover so called biochemical markers can be performed. Alkaline phosphatase and urine hydroxyproline measurements, which have been used for many years for formation and resorption, respectively, are replaced with new more specific and sensitive markers. These new markers have become more available to follow-up osteoporosis, metabolic bone diseases and metastatic bone cancers. It is important to remember that individual markers reflect different biochemical and physiological processes and may not, therefore, always show identical changes. However, with technological improvements and the introduction of new markers it is certain to reach more detailed information about bone events. This study describes the characteristics of new markers and clinical applications of bone markers functioning in bone turnover. Keywords: Bone resorption, Bone formation, MarkerTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:523-527
