We studied 30 patients who were diagnosed to have bladder cancer in our urology department between 1989-1999; 15 patients with no previous bladder cancer history were assigned as control group. Tissue sections prepared from paraffin embedded specimens were studied for their TGF-Beta1 content by immunohistochemical staining.
Compared to superficial tumors (Ta,T1),TGF-Beta1 levels were markedly reduced in invasive bladder tumors (p<0.001). High grade tumors (grade 3) had lower TGF-Beta1 levels than low grade tumors (grade 1 and 2)(p<0.01). Consistently, compared to normal epithelium, an increased TGF-Beta 1 level was noted in the afflicted tissue (p=0.05).
In light of these findings, a link between decreased TGF-Beta 1 levels and the progressive, aggressive and metastatic behaviour of the dissease can be established. Further studies should aim at quantifying the TGF-Beta 1 levels in the tissue and determining the value that allows the surgeon to select the optimal cyctectomy procedure at earlier stages. Keywords: Bladder cancer, TGF-Beta 1, Progression, Cyctectomy, GradeTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:470-474
