**** Prof.Dr., Florence Nightingale Hastanesi Kardiyovasküler Cerrahi Bölümü, İSTANBUL Nowadays, coronary artery disease (CAD) caused by atherosclerosis is one of the the major causes of the death. This study was performed to determine the relationship coronary artery occlusion with fibrinogen (as a coagulation factor), antithrombin III (AT-III) (as an anticoagulation factor) and blood lipid levels [total cholesterol (T.chol), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-chol), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-chol), VLDL-cholesterol (VLDL-chol) and triglyceride (TG)].
Blood samples were taken from 78 male patients (mean age, 55.46±7.71) with coronary artery occlusion confirmed by angiography and from 33 healthy male subjects (mean age, 47.15±6.61).
Patients with CAD had significantly higher values of fibrinogen, T.chol/HDL-chol ratio, LDL-chol/HDL-chol ratio (p<0.0001, p<0.05, p<0.05, respectively), however significantly lower values of AT-III and HDL-chol than those in control group (p<0.0001, p<0.001, respectively). There were no significantly differences in TG, T.chol, VLDL-chol, LDL-chol, and body mass index (BMI) between patients and control groups (p>0.05). BMI of the patients who had bypass-operation were found significantly higher than that never had bypass-operation before (p<0.05).
Finally; it seems that blood lipid levels have disturbed balance between procoagulation and anticoagulation. For this reason the control of blood lipid levels are highly important for cardiovascular events. Keywords: Fibrinogen, Antithrombin III, Cholesterol,
