** Arş.Gör.Dr., Fırat Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Plastik ve Rekonstrüktif Cerrahi AD, ELAZIĞ Snake venom poisoning that is seen in rural area of Turkey is caused by snakes of Vipera family. After a snake bite, the patient should lie flat and keep calm. The use of elastic bandaging above the bite site, immobilizing the limb and rapid transport to the hospital are strongly recommended. In the hospital, the bite site should be cleaned and tetanus prophylaxis must be given. If envenoming symptoms and signs are mild, victim is admitted and symptomatic therapy is given. Antivenom has to be given in moderate and severe envenoming cases. Since snakes of Vipera family have haematotoxic venom, complete blood cell count and coagulation tests should be done. Cases with compartment syndrome and necrosis require surgery. In our country snake envenomation cases usually cannot get appropriate therapy. Because of this, the treatment of venomous snake bites should be teached in a more detailed way during medical training. Keywords: Snakebite, Viper, EnvenomationTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2001, 21:528-532
