Introduction-Objective: Family Planning services have an important place in primary health-care services because of the needs of the public. These services are evaluated as a team service in primary health-care centers and Mother and Child Health-Care Units. The utility of these services may be monitored by rates of contraceptive usage. The aim of the present research is to evaluate the contraceptive usage among 15-49 age-group women in Gölbaşı Education and Research Health District for seventeen years between establishment in 1983 and 1999, and compare these results with the rates in Turkey.
Materials-Methods : This is a descriptive study, and the data were obtained from the annual work reports of the five primary health-care centers between 1983 and 1999 which are in service since the foundation of the Gölbaşı Education and Research Health District in 1983.
Results-Conclusion: The rate of modern (effective) contraceptive method usage among the study group had increased markedly from 1983 to 1999, and rates were 9.0% in 1983, reaching to 50.4% in 1993 and 55.2% in 1999. The greatest advance in usage was encountered for Intra Uterine Device (IUD). The usage of IUD had increased to 35.7% in 1999 while it was only 3.2% in 1983. The rates for pill and condom were between 1.9-7.6% , and 3.1-18.6% respectively. Tubal ligation was first recorded in 1992 and rate had altered between 2.7-4.5%. Vasectomy, injectables, and Norplant had entered the records in 1996, and their rates had been low.
