**** Dr., Gülhane Askeri Tıp Akademisi Biyokimya AD, Purpose: Nearby the known benefits of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy, some investigators have notified that HBO2 may cause oxidative stress by inducing lipid peroxidation. In spite such of suggestions, a comprehensive investigation, which inquires the amounts of HBO2 induced oxidative stress, couldn't be found in literature. This study was performed to investigate whether HBO2 may induce oxidative stress at serious levels or not.
Methods: The lung was choosen as the target organ which is most affected by HBO2 exposure, TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substans) test was used to measure lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) plus catalase (CAT) activity were determined to define the state of antioxidant defense systems.
Results: All three groups, including hyperbaric O2, normobaric O2 and hyperbaric room air resulted with significant increases of CAT activity. TBARS levels also showed significant increases in both, hyperbaric and normobaric O2 groups. In addition, it was observed that hyperbaric O2 caused significantly more lipid peroxidation than hyperbaric room air. On contrary, SOD activity didn't increase significantly.
Conclusion: As a result, these findings suggest that pure O2 has a more considerable role in oxidative stress, caused by HBO2, than hyperbaric conditions. Keywords: Hyperbaric Oxygen, Superoxide Dismutase,
